New Audience, Similar Vibes
Readers and fans of Kemmerer’s previous fantasy stories will recognize the author’s voice and style while reading “Warrior Princess Assassin”. If you’ve read her books in the “Defy the Night” series or the “A Curse So Dark and Lonely” series, you’ll recognize the similarities between the Young Adult structured stories that are mirrored in this new adult world.
Kemmerer seems to have hit her stride with the multi-POV narrators, and it works especially well in “Warrior Princess Assassin” because each of the three main characters has something that keeps you pulling for them, and it only seems to come out during their own narrated chapters.
I can’t lie – I was hooked on this story early on. Each character’s voice, each chapter end, had me furiously flipping pages to see what happened next.
Princess Jory is naïve, but determined to be an active part of her own story.
Asher is weary and beaten down by life and circumstances, but remains loyal and protective of the people he cares about.
Ky carries himself with strength which can come off cold, but he sees more than he leads others to believe.
Okay, Val… how is it an “Adult” romantasy?
Romantasy alludes to a romance. Duh, Val. Spill the tea!
There are three main characters, so who ends up in the romance relationship? There’s a romance storyline for everybody! One of the notes that I took while reading was “Man, this might be the first love triangle I truly love.”
Don’t worry, this isn’t a spoiler. Brigid Kemmerer posted the fact that she’s considering this a variation of Why Choose on her socials prior to publication. It’s also the slowest of slow burns.
“You are not my prisoner, Asher. You are free to stay, just as you are free to leave. But no one will take you away from her. No one will take her away from you. Certainly not me.” I lean in, letting him hear the righteous conviction in my voice. “You are free. But if this is where you choose to remain, know this: no one will take you away from me.”
Brigid Kemmerer’s new story is reminiscent of her previous works, but with the added maturity and growth that comes with age and experience. New readers will enjoy this brand new fantasy world, but Kemmerer’s YA fans will find themselves engaged and enticed by the new worlds of Astranza and Incendar just as they were with Kandala and Emberfall.
Warrior, Princess, Assassin — all three work best when they work together. I can’t wait to see how their stories grow individually and together throughout the rest of this trilogy.
