Hate at first sight couldn’t possibly exist, right? That’s what Grace Buchanan thought, before her useless car stranded her on the side of a deserted road just inside the Green Valley city limits. When Tucker Haywood—tall and handsome and full of southern charm— shows up to help, her reaction to him is the strongest thing she’s ever felt in her life, and it makes no freaking sense. It doesn’t make much sense to Tucker either. Not why she hates him, or why he finds her so intriguing. He knows well enough that Grace is moving to Green Valley for a fresh start, not to distract him when he’s got no room for something like her in his life. The complications between them are endless, but that doesn’t stop her definitely not love-at-first-sight feelings from changing into something else entirely.Grace and Tucker are about to learn the hard way that in Green Valley, hating someone has never tasted so sweet.

‘Batter of Wits’ is a full-length contemporary romance, can be read as a standalone, and is book #5 in the Donner Bakery series, Green Valley World, Penny Reid Book Universe.

“One nudge over the edge of this cliff, and she would have me free falling.” -Batter of Wits

Batter of Wits by Karla Sorensen has that perfectly alluring combination of salty and sweet in her two main characters, Grace and Tucker. There is nothing I love more than a good “enemies to lovers” romance, but when you throw in a family love curse it brings my love to binge-worthy levels.

I was first introduced to Karla Sorensen in debut launch from Smartypants Romance. She has since gained a new fan given that her stories in Green Valley aren’t your normal insta-love romances. Batter of Wits is a tug of war worthy book of emotions between Grace Buchanan and her bearded nemesis, Tucker Haywood. Do you all know the show Hart of Dixie? Grace and Tucker’s relationship is reminiscent of that show, but I much prefer how Karla Sorensen brings them both together.

I loved getting to know Grace. I was instantly in-tune with her emotional rollercoaster when she first met Tucker. That’s the thing about strong emotions, and there is most definitely something to that saying about the thin line between love and hate. I found Grace’s struggles in her new hometown of Green Valley utterly relatable, sometimes after a big move it is immensely hard to feel like yourself in a new place. Carving a space out for yourself in a small town is even harder.

Tucker was more a mystery for me. I appreciated how Karla handled his character arc, and with all of his character traits it became easier to see that Captain America was the inspiration for her. Hello Sir!

Having a book like Batter of Wits set in Green Valley wouldn’t be complete without some quirky side characters in town and I adored getting to know more of the Buchanan clan as well as Miss Maxine who I now aspire to become when I grow up. I also cannot wait for the next book in the series! Who will the love curse fixate on next? I’m eagerly awaiting the next installment!

Already out, and currently available in Kindle Unlimited for a limited time, Batter of Wits is an excellent way to escape social-distancing doldrums, and kick-off your weekend!
