A brand new vampire. The lover who got her killed. And a desire neither can deny.

Tatyana Vorona used to be human… until she met the dark and mysterious Oleg Sokolov. He lives in a world of power, blood, and betrayal. And now so does she.

By helping him, Tatyana helped herself to an early grave. Then she rose again as a vampire with the ability to manipulate water. Tatyana is in hiding, trying to master her magic, blood lust, and the terrifying draw she still feels toward the man who set all this in motion.

He might control fire, but flames of desire have a will of their own.

Oleg’s empire was shaken by his daughter’s betrayal and the bloodshed that followed. Now someone else is trying to take advantage of the chaos to destabilize his rule further. He should be hunting them down, making an example of anyone who dares to challenge him.

Instead, he’s searching for her. No matter how far Tatyana runs, he’s determined to return her to his side. And when it turns out she’s hiding right underneath his nose, he’ll do whatever it takes to make Tatyana his. Permanently.

“A little bit of pursuit is good for the soul, Mika. Things that come to you easily are not as treasured as those you must fight for.”

Tatyana and Oleg’s story continues in Crimson Oath, Elizabeth Hunter’s second installment of her wildly popular new series, The Firebird and the Wolf. Book 2 seamlessly picks up from the previous ending where we left Tatyana hiding from Oleg as she tried to figure out how she was going to navigate her place in the treacherous and deadly world of vampires that she would have never chosen voluntarily. True to form, EH peppers the first few chapters with subtle reminders of book 1 details that help to quickly reimmerse the reader into this diverse and complex world. The two parallel story lines, Tatyana and Oleg’s relationship and the growing subterfuge within Oleg’s Eastern European/Asian empire, intertwine perfectly to keep you hooked page after page as both build to a dramatic ending. There are also cameo appearances by some of our favorite vampires from EH’s other vampire series, a treat that I greatly loved!

EH’s vampire world is reflective of the diverse cultures and peoples found across the globe. Crimson Oath takes place in Eastern Europe, which gives the story a different and exotic feel, with the majority of the time showcasing the Poshani, a traveling gypsy community. Her time as a protected guest of the caravan offers Tatyana the reprieve and environment she needs to figure out how to navigate this new life as a vampire and if/how there will be any room in it for Oleg. While Oleg searches for her he begins to realize that his true motives, where she is concerned, are more complex than he imagined.

“She’s nothing you want and everything you need.”

I love how EH’s characters are all so very unique in this world and that no two relationships in the plethera of series she has written are the same. While Tatyana and Oleg have the same ethnic background, their differences in age of existence as well as their elemental amnis provides for some interesting relational dynamics. Tatyana and Oleg’s convoluted past adds an extra layer of tension they have to overcome if they are ever going to even co-exist around each other. But the fact that they have such a tangible attraction will make it hard for them to stay apart for very long, especially when things really get spicy.

“I’ve heard it said that to be trusted is a greater gift than being loved.”

While Crimson Oath is a spicy, vampire romance it is also a great story of mystery, intrigue, and figuring out your own way in a crazy, new world. Tatyana is smart, fiercely independent, and highly compassionate person and her search to find purpose and belonging takes on an urgency as parties within both the Poshani and the Russian vampire empire conspire to wrest power from the existing leaders. Tatyana must learn quickly how to navigate the deception and threats all why trying to not lose sight of who she is at the core. In the end I think she succeeds! EH brings this installment to a close with a totally unexpected and perfect ending that sets up for another book! I’m so loving this series and can’t wait for Book 3 in The Firebird and the Wolf.
