From J. Bree, bestselling author of The Bonds That Tie, comes an epic and enthralling new romantasy series.
I devoted my life to a king who was not my own.
On the road to ultimate honor and glory, I lost everything.
Now, in a world ravaged by the whims of those who rule, I must turn my back on a lifetime of friendships and loyalties to face my own fate.
The Savage Prince.
Heir to the high-fae throne of the Southern Lands, he is known for his brutality and cold heart. But with the kingdom on the brink of ruin, I have no choice but to seek him out.
The war between the fae and the witches rages, and there’s no end in sight. My destiny is clear—help the prince defeat his enemies before it’s too late.
One small problem.
I am Rookesbane Eveningstar.
The Favored Child returned, a Witch of the Woods.
The greatest enemy of my Fates-blessed mate.
“…sometimes the right path looks far more dangerous than the one that leads to ruin.”
When I tell you that I DEVOURED “The Crown of Oaths and Curses” by J. Bree what I mean is that I neglected all adult responsibilities and possibly left my family with abandonment issues because I could not get the words in my brain fast enough. I felt the dark cloud of a book slump attempting to consume me when I stumbled upon a tik-tok saying that this was the best book they have EVER read… I could not let such a bold statement go uninvestigated. What I am declaring here and now friends…is that when this series is complete, I am prepared to make it my whole personality.
We already know that J. Bree is the absolute Master of bully romance/enemies to lovers after “The Bonds that Tie” series correct? Correct. She knows exactly how to write her bullies so that while you may want to smite them with all the power of the Gods of your ancestors, you also kinda want to give them a hug, because they have big feelings and valid reasons for the anger.
Rookesbane Eveningstar is a witch of the woods, with a connection to the earth that is essential to ensure the prosperity of the lands around her. When she loses her family she flees her home to join a battle that is not her own, and spends centuries becoming a hardened warrior and an even more all-powerful witch. When the time has come for her to meet her fated mate, and fulfill the prophecy that will bring an end to suffering amongst the masses, she makes a journey to reveal herself to the Savage Prince, who is none-to-fond of witches.
“You are not welcome here, Rookesbane Eveningstar.”
Soren, The Savage Prince, I hate him. He is the most stubborn and frustrating main character I think I have ever read…and that is so EXCITING to me! I have seen J. Bree’s ability to make you fall in love with characters that have seemingly no redeeming qualities, and I cannot wait to see how this plays out. Soren has an understandable hatred of witches, as there are hordes of them who are set to destroy everything in their path after being corrupted by an evil man with empty promises. So, when he meets his fated mate and she is herself a witch, even one with notable differences than those destroying the lands, he cannot see past her bloodline and keeps her locked away. And while he has every right to be hesitant to trust her, she shows him time and again that she does not mean him or his family harm, and he continues to refuse to see reason and treats her as an enemy.
“When I look at her, I am the Savage Prince”
I cannot explain how much I love Rookesbane Eveningstar as a character, even if I were to write a novel myself. She is one of the most powerful characters I have ever read, and she displays it in her restraint rather than in blatant shows of magic. In a few scenes we are given glimpses of what she is capable of, and it is truly humbling to read what she chooses to endure, rather than destroy, because she knows that fulfilling the prophecy to bring peace to the land is important even above her own safety and comfort.
“No Matter how hard I fight against them, the Fates have wisely chosen me a mate who will make me question everything”
And while I loved “The Crown of Oaths and Curses” I do know that some will see the length and be reluctant to start. There is a lot of repetition and extended scenes that could have been shortened to make the story move faster, but I was just happy to be able to stay in this world a little longer. I must also warn those who are looking for instant gratification that there is almost no romance in this book, but I have no doubt the tension and build-up will be worth the wait. And I cannot stress enough that Rookesbane does not get treated well in this book, if that is something that will be hard on your heart, this may not be the series for you. I have all the confidence in the world that J. Bree will give us a truly epic happily ever after, but getting there is going to be a rough journey that I am so excited to go on. But fair warning, this ended on a brutal but beautiful cliffhanger, but it is a pain I would endure a thousand times to see its resolution. Congratulations J. Bree on the beginning of another truly epic series!
