Katherine wasn’t looking for anything extraordinary in her life. She had a job she loved, a husband she adored, and a home in the beautiful seaside town of Moonstone Cove. Okay yes, she worked too much and had fallen out of touch with all her friends, but that happened to everyone, right? And sure, she was feeling a little creaky in the mornings and couldn’t drink coffee after noon, but that was just life in middle age. Four minutes was all it took for fate to run away with anything that resembled normal. Now Katherine is trying to place mysterious psychic visions into her previously ordered life. She’s playing referee between a displaced Southern mama and a sarcastic mechanic with a chip on her shoulder. And her quiet life has been upended by a mysterious rash of violent acts by students at her school. Thankfully, her new friends have powers of their own, and together they just might discover who or what has it in for the quiet citizens of Moonstone Cove.

I see another great series in the making…

Elizabeth Hunter gave us a tease regarding her new series, Moonstone Cove, in the final book of the Glimmer Lake series with the introduction of Dr. Katharine Bassi, a biophysicist and college professor who had studied paranormal brain activity. At that time she was skeptical there was a logical explanation for premonitions. We meet her again in Runaway Fate, when an unexpected paranormal abilities emerge, giving her a glimpse of the future and the overwhelming instinct to intercede in that event is the catalyst that will change Katherine’s world and perspective, and that of two other women: Megan and Toni, forever.
I know I must sound like a broken record (you older ladies will know what that means) but I cannot extol enough Elizabeth Hunter’s skill at creating unique characters and authentic relationships. Every book, whether it’s in her romance, contemporary fantasy series or this foray into paranormal mystery, contains unique and compelling people who make each story a pleasure to read. Just as with the Glimmer Lake series, where each book was from the perspective of one of the three middle aged ladies who had been friends their entire lives, Runaway Fate is from Katharine’s perspective. An introverted and socially reclusive person by nature, Katharine has an amazing marriage to Baxter, who is also an academic, but no girlfriends she socializes with. But a shared paranormal experience with Megan and Toni, forges a bond between three completely different personalities that expand and enhance each other’s lives. Their quirky differences make for a fascinating comradery as they solve a mystery and drink wine on Katharine’s deck overlooking the ocean.
I love these new paranormal mysteries by Elizabeth Hunter. As a middle-aged woman myself, having women like me as the heroines; with their imperfect bodies, older sensibilities, and appreciation for the simple things in life, seeing them do extraordinary things is awesome! I am also pleased by how well each story hooks you from the beginning and keeps you intrigued page after page as the plot unfolds to a highly suspenseful and never expected ending.  As a bonus, book 2, Fate Actually, is scheduled to release December 15th.
