Fall in love—from the very beginning. Discover the first book in the captivating, #1 New York Times bestselling Selection series.
Prepare to be swept into a world of breathless fairy-tale romance, swoonworthy characters, glittering gowns, and fierce intrigue perfect for readers who loved Divergent, Delirium, or The Wrath & the Dawn.
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape a rigid caste system, live in a palace, and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon. But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her, and competing for a crown she doesn’t want.
Then America meets Prince Maxon—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined.
“True love is usually the most inconvenient kind.”
Am I the last one to the party? With Netflix adapting The Selection by Kiera Cass and a reliable recommendation from a fellow Bee, I dove into this dystopian favorite that the book world has been buzzing about for YEARS. Even though I’m a few years behind, I did make up for it by reading this book—start to finish—in one sitting.
Now I see the light! America Singer is a young adult living with her family in a dystopian world with a caste system to keep order. Everyone has their place, and a job to boot. There are also a strict set of rules that help everyone keep to their caste. Part of that system is The Selection: a process by which the male member of the royal family chooses a mate. Think of it like The Hunger Games meets The Princess Diaries. 35 of the most eligible young ladies are selected through the different castes to go to the castle in the hopes of securing the chosen Prince’s affections.
America gets her invite, and is adamant about not wanting to be part of this process. She has a (secret) boyfriend in a caste that is lower than her own, and wants nothing more to marry him, consequences be damned. Her mother wants better for her, and it doesn’t hurt that if she’s chosen the family gets monetary compensation. We all know how this goes, and so, America gets selected to be one of the 35 young ladies, and her boy toy breaks it off knowing that he can’t give her the life she deserves. Not only do the ladies have to steer clear of harm within each other, they also are dealing with unrest within the kingdom and a constant barrage from rebels that wish to do the Royal Family harm. America strikes up a friendship with Prince Maxon, and even though she was sure she wouldn’t develop feelings for the handsome and quirky Prince, she soon discovers how wrong she was. That’s all before her ex-boyfriend shows up as a newly enlisted Royal Guard and tells her that he still loves her.
I am definitely not too old to enjoy this series, and I think if you haven’t read The Selection already, you definitely need to even if it’s just to prepare yourself for what should be an amazing Netflix series! Available to purchase in all forms: ebook, audiobook, paperback and hardcover. This is one series that you will instantly love!
