BREAKING NEWS: The Bad Boy of Baseball, Maddox Paige, is totally and utterly whipped.

Okay, that might not be the headlines in the newspaper this morning, but it's the reality of my current situation.

It all started a month ago when I received a call from my best friend, Kinsley. She got a new job in Chicago and needed a place to stay. I've known the girl since I was five, what harm would it be to have her stay at my place for a while?

Ha! Total disaster.

Now instead of going out every night with my teammates, I'm couch surfing and sketching endless photos of my best friend . . . but that's the least of my concerns.

The disaster, you ask? I'm rapidly falling head over cleats in love with my best friend, my roommate, and my number one fan.

And she has no idea . . .

It’s not a mystery that I am dialed into whatever Meghan Quinn writes. I am particularly a fan of her series of stand-alone baseball books. The latest installment, The Change Up, tells the story of Maddox, notorious bad boy pitcher to the Rebels, and his very bestest friend, Kinsey.

Honestly, Meghan Quinn cracks me up with her ridiculousness, and The Change Up is no different. The fact that the big, bad boy of Professional Baseball not only lets his BFF move into his apartment while she gets on her feet, but that Kinsey is also a vegan, zero-waste, animal shelter worker with a soft heart is one of the craziest combinations for a couple in her books. Not surprisingly though, The Change Up is chock full of heart-wrenching emotions. Maddox and Kinsey traverse their way from a solid friendship, to a relationship that they both secretly want, but neither know how to attain.

Part of hilarity of a classic Meghan Quinn book is the banter between characters. To go along with the banter,  the appearance of Maddox’s Rebel teammates, Cory, Jason, and Lincoln also help to round out the emotions of the book.  Not only are the baseball boys up to their same antics, but Kinsey is a natural fit to their weird dynamic. Kinsey also shows the human side of Maddox to his teammates First, when she suddenly becomes a roommate to the broody and solitary man. She also shows Maddox’s soft side when she brings home a three-legged hound from the shelter and manages to get Maddox and the team involved with the animal shelter. Who doesn’t love a good animal arc in the story? With every great love story there is some drama.  Maddox and Kinsey’s drama nearly did me in. A Meghan Quinn “break up” is hard to read, but how those main characters make up is one of the best parts of the book. I think it should be noted here that Maddox and Kinsey’s relationship is all about big emotions, neither of them do anything in small measures. So while the fights are big, the makeups are even bigger. That fact alone makes The Change Up such a great experience for the readers.

The Change Up is the perfect combination of delicious heat and hilarious quips. Meghan Quinn shows her prowess with a range of emotions that go from sweet, to tragic, to swoon-worthy love and finally ends with yet another tear-inducing happily-ever-after…or at least I thought so.
