Inseparable through university, Eva, Benedict, Sylvie and Lucien graduate into an exhilarating world on the brink of the new millennium. Eager to shrug off the hardships of her childhood, Eva breaks away to work at a big bank. Benedict stays behind to complete his PhD in Physics and pine for Eva, while siblings Sylvie and Lucien pursue a more bohemian existence. But as their twenties give way to their thirties, the four friends find their paths diverging as they struggle to navigate broken hearts and thwarted dreams. With every summer that passes, they try to remain as close as they once were - but this is far from easy. One friend's triumph coincides with another's disaster, one finds love as another loses it, and one comes to their senses as another is changing their mind ...A novel about finding the courage to carry on despite life not always turning out as expected, and a powerful testament to love and friendship as the constants in an ever-changing world, Invincible Summer is a dazzling depiction of the highs and lows of adulthood and the greater forces that shape us.
What is the meaning of life????
Invincible Summer by Alice Adams is the fictional story of four college friends: Eva, Benedict and siblings Sylvia and Lucien, set in mid 80’s England. We meet these friends in their last year of University as they debate their purpose and plans for life. Little do we know that the underlining purpose of this book is revealed in this interaction. As the story unfolds we follow each character as they individually try to navigate the transition into adulthood. The intertwining of their lives and how those interactions relate to and effect each other makes for captivating reading. You can’t help but be intrigued by their choices and motivated to watch how the consequences of the these decisions plays out.
Invincible Summer is a well written novel that entertains it’s readers. It has great characters and wonderful story line. By these things alone it is an easily recommended book. But………..
Invincible Summer is so much more! It is a book on philosophy, on relationships, on remembrance, on looking forward. In short; it is a book that will have you contemplating your past, present, and future. It will have you reflecting on past friendships and current relationships. The thing is, you will be so involved in the story, you won’t completely realize it is leading you to ponder these things until you get to the end of the book. You will finish Invincible Summer both entertained and with a genuine feeling that life is a journey, with both ups and downs, but an amazing experience regardless.
Tanya’s love for books has been a lifelong passion that she likes sharing with others. Reading is also the thing that relaxes her after a day of juggling the many responsibilities that come with being being wife to an amazing man, mother to four great kids spread around the world, business manager, and farm hand on their place in southwest Missouri; home to Akaushi cattle and a menagerie of pygmy goats, horses, chickens, dogs and cats.
