They’re running for their lives…

After surviving the zombie apocalypse for two years, Tye LeBow never expected to be saved from a hungry gang of zombies by a geek with a bad attitude and a penchant for explosives. Tye can’t quite work out why scientist Polly Parker saved him. She doesn’t want his protection, and she certainly doesn’t want his company. But Tye has no intention of leaving the beguiling geek behind.

Polly doesn’t want to leave her home, but when the wakers begin to show signs of a burgeoning intelligence, heading south is the only option. With a car packed full of homemade explosives, and Tye’s very large axe, they are ready for the road trip of their lives.

Bombs and blades aren’t the only keys to survival–they’ll need to rely on each other, in a way that neither could have imagined…

A book about a zombie Apocalypse with a bit of a Love story..okay I’m in.

Okay Waking Up Alive by Emma Shortt is a book that took me 10 chapters to get into and another 5 chapters after that to really figure out what the hell was going on.  But I am very glad that I stuck with it.  This book is best described as what happens when you take The Walking Dead and cross it with I am Legend.

And the title Waking Up Alive……I see what you did there Emma Shortt very clever I love it.

The main characters are Tyrone  and Polly.  Tyrone is your typical hero that you will find in most post apocalyptic scenarios.  He is an all around good guy, badass with an ax who just wants to help people and get to a safe place. It is not really hard to like him, you just can’t help it. I was really able to connect with his character and he is what kept me interested.

Polly on the other hand was hard to like for me.  She is the prime example of the smart dumb person, you know the onese that have all the smarts in the world but common sense maybe lacking. She aggravated me for half of the book until she came to her senses and started listening to reason and also opened herself up to Tye.

I wish there was more of a development of the romantic relationship between Tye and Polly.  I felt like it was lacking and kind of rushed, but I did appreciate Shortt trying to explain the urgent need for the relationship to develop quickly(you know end of the world and all that jazz).  So it was more  palatable than other fast love stories.

My two  favorite things about this book was the way they described the Zombies or Wakers as they like to call them.  they were more similar to the I am Legend ones than anything but still a bit different. The concept of you not being actually the walking dead but your body fighting off a virus was cool.  Second is the ending  it was the first time in any of these kinds of books that actually gave  me the ending that I was looking for I don’t have to assume what happens after, I don’t have to hope for a short story after to tell me what I want to know.

So if you liked the movie I am legend and you are a fan of The Walking Dead this is definitely the book for you to read.
